Frequently asked questions

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain-text file placed at the root of your domain that gives AI engines a structured summary of your site — what it does, who it's for, and its key pages. Think of it as robots.txt, but for large language models. It was proposed by Jeremy Howard (fast.ai) and is now widely supported.

Do ChatGPT and Perplexity actually read it?

Yes. GPTBot (ChatGPT), PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, and Google's AI Overviews all crawl llms.txt when indexing sites. It's one of the highest-leverage single-file GEO improvements you can make, taking effect within one crawl cycle.

Where does the file go?

Place it at the root of your domain: https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. For Next.js, save it in the /public folder. For WordPress, upload it via FTP to your site root. It must be publicly accessible without authentication.

What's the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?

llms.txt is a short, high-level summary (under 500 words) intended for quick context. llms-full.txt is an optional extended version with full page content. Start with llms.txt — most AI engines prioritise it and it's enough for significant citation improvement.

Does it work alongside robots.txt?

Yes, and both matter. robots.txt controls which AI crawlers can access your site at all — if GPTBot is blocked, llms.txt is irrelevant. Use our AI Bot Checker to confirm AI crawlers can reach your site before or alongside deploying llms.txt.
